How to use it

Read it slowly and enjoy the big, beautiful pictures. Pause and ask where your child thinks the smile might be. Afterwards, talk about the small things that make them smile.

What it helps with

Comprehension and discussion questions

Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.

  1. “Why was Augustus sad?”
  2. “Where did he look for his smile?”
  3. “What did he notice on his journey?”
  4. “Where did he find his smile in the end?”
  5. “What makes you smile?”
  6. “What could help you when you feel sad?”

5-minute activities to try together

Smile hunt

Go on a short walk and look for five things that make you smile. Draw them when you get home.

Mirror faces

Look in a mirror and make a sad face, then a smile. Talk about what helps change one into the other.
