How to use it

Read it with lots of expression and let your child guess whether each animal is Mummy. Afterwards, talk about what to do if they ever get lost: who to ask, and what to say.

What it helps with

Comprehension and discussion questions

Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.

  1. “How did Little Owl get lost?”
  2. “How do you think he felt on the ground?”
  3. “Who helped him look for his mummy?”
  4. “Why did Squirrel keep finding the wrong animal?”
  5. “What would you do if you got lost?”
  6. “Who are safe people you could ask for help?”

5-minute activities to try together

Describe Mummy

Take turns describing someone in the family with three clues, like Little Owl did. Can the other person guess who it is?

Lost plan

Agree a simple plan for getting lost: stay put, find a safe grown-up like a shop worker, and say your name. Practise it with a toy.
