Rules & speaking up

Oi Frog!: questions to ask and activities to try

Cats sit on mats and hares sit on chairs, but Frog does not want to sit on a log. Oi Frog! is a laugh-out-loud rhyming book that also gets children thinking about rules, and about speaking up when something doesn't feel fair.

What age is it for? Oi Frog! is best for ages 3–6. Good for: Rhyming fun, and talking about rules and speaking up.

How to use it

Read it for the rhymes first and let your child guess each one before you turn the page. Next time, pause when Frog complains and ask whether Cat's rules are fair. Funny books are a gentle way into talking about disagreeing politely.

Why I like this one

Oi Frog! is pure fun, and I don't think every book has to carry a big message. That said, there's a nice small one in here: Frog doesn't want to follow a silly rule, and he says so.

Children love guessing the rhymes before you turn the page, so leave a gap and let them finish the line. If you want a conversation afterwards, ask, “Was Cat's rule fair? What would you have said?”

What it helps with

Comprehension and discussion questions

Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.

  1. “What does a cat sit on? What about a hare?”
  2. “Why didn’t Frog want to sit on a log?”
  3. “Was Cat’s rule fair? Why or why not?”
  4. “How did Frog tell Cat he didn’t agree?”
  5. “What rhymes with your name?”
  6. “Is there a rule you think is a bit silly? What would you change?”

5-minute activities to try together

Rhyme and sit

Take turns choosing an animal and finding something for it to sit on that rhymes, like a bee on a knee. The sillier the better.

Fair or not?

Think of three family rules together. For each one, talk about why it exists and whether it feels fair to everyone.
