Christopher Nibble: questions to ask and activities to try
All the guinea pigs in Dandeville love dandelions, but soon there are hardly any left. Christopher Nibble is a gentle story about caring for nature, and how one small guinea pig can make a big difference.
What age is it for? Christopher Nibble is best for ages 3–7. Good for: Caring for nature, and making a difference.
Christopher Nibble (Charlotte Middleton)

- 3-7
- Best for
- Caring for nature, and making a difference
Read it once for the story. Next time, pause when the dandelions are running out and ask what the guinea pigs could do. It's a lovely way into talking about looking after the world around us.
What it helps with
- Caring for nature and plants
- Seeing how one person can make a difference
- Not taking more than we need
- Patience while something grows
Comprehension and discussion questions
Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.
- “What do the guinea pigs in Dandeville love to eat?”
- “Why were the dandelions running out?”
- “What did Christopher do with the last dandelion?”
- “How did he help the other guinea pigs?”
- “What could we do to look after nature?”
- “What would you like to grow?”
5-minute activities to try together
Grow a dandelion
Plant some seeds (cress or dandelion are quick) and take turns looking after them, like Christopher did.
Seed hunt
Look for dandelion clocks on a walk. Blow one and count the seeds flying away to grow new flowers.
