Beautiful Oops!: questions to ask and activities to try

Beautiful Oops! (Barney Saltzberg)
- Age
- 2-6
- Best for
- Little ones who get upset about spills, tears and smudges
Let your child lift the flaps and turn the pages. Then try saying “Beautiful oops!” together next time milk spills or a drawing goes wrong.
What it helps with
- Getting upset about spills, tears and smudges
- Toddlers and preschoolers who want things just so
- Seeing a mistake as something to play with
- Calm words to use when things go wrong
Comprehension and discussion questions
Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.
- “What did the tear in the page turn into?”
- “Which oops was your favourite?”
- “How do you feel when you spill something?”
- “What could we say when something goes wrong?”
- “What could a smudge on your drawing become?”
- “Do grown-ups make oopses too?”
5-minute activities to try together
Splodge pictures
Drop a splodge of paint on paper and fold it in half. Open it and decide together what it looks like.
Say it together
Agree that whoever makes an oops says “Beautiful oops!”. Grown-ups too, when they burn the toast.
