All Join In: questions to ask and activities to try
Everybody likes to shout and sing, but it's more fun when we all join in. All Join In is a noisy, joyful collection of poems by Quentin Blake, made for reading aloud together.
What age is it for? All Join In is best for ages 3–7. Good for: Joining in, making noise together, and having fun with words.
All Join In (Quentin Blake)
- Age
- 3-7
- Best for
- Joining in, making noise together, and having fun with words
Read one or two poems at a time and save the shouting for the chorus. It's a great one for siblings or friends to share, because everyone gets a part.
What it helps with
- Joining in with others
- Rhythm and rhyme, for early readers
- Taking turns in a group
- Having fun with words, for reluctant readers
Comprehension and discussion questions
Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.
- “Which poem did you like best?”
- “What does “all join in” mean?”
- “Which poem was the noisiest?”
- “Is it more fun doing something on your own or together?”
- “What would you like everyone to join in with?”
- “Can you make up a line for one of the poems?”
5-minute activities to try together
Family chorus
Choose a poem and give everyone a line or a noise. Perform it together.
Kitchen band
Make music with pans and spoons, like in “Sorting Out the Kitchen Pans”. Take turns being the conductor.
