How to use it

Read it slowly and talk about each place they visit. The ending is about letting go of someone you love, so give your child time to talk about how the boy feels.

What it helps with

Comprehension and discussion questions

Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.

  1. “Why did Bear need a new home?”
  2. “Where did they try first?”
  3. “Why wasn’t the jungle right?”
  4. “Where did Bear belong?”
  5. “How did the boy feel?”
  6. “How can friends stay friends when they’re apart?”

5-minute activities to try together

Animal homes

Match toy animals to the places they really belong: polar bear, camel, monkey.

Postcard to Bear

Draw a postcard the boy might send to Bear in his new home.
