The Snail and the Whale: questions to ask and activities to try
A tiny snail longs to see the world and hitches a ride on a whale's tail. When the whale is stranded, it's the snail who saves him. The Snail and the Whale shows that small people can do big things.
What age is it for? The Snail and the Whale is best for ages 3–6. Good for: Children who feel small, or too little to make a difference.
The Snail and the Whale (Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler)

Ask how the snail felt on the huge whale's tail, then focus on the moment she helps. It's a good book for children who feel too little to make a difference.
Why I like this one
This is one I'd keep for children who feel too small to matter. The snail doesn't become bigger or stronger. She just does the thing she can do, at the right moment, and it's enough.
I'd read it slowly. The pictures of the sea and the sky are worth time, and a calmer pace suits a story about noticing. Afterwards, rather than asking what the lesson was, try asking, “What could a very small person do to help?” Children usually have better ideas than we expect.

Comprehension and discussion questions
Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.
- “The snail was tiny. How did she still help the whale?”
- “Why did the snail want to leave her rock?”
- “What did the snail see on her journey?”
- “How did the schoolchildren help?”
- “When have you helped someone even though you're small?”
- “Where would you like to travel?”
