How to use it

Make all the noises with your child, then read the last pages quietly. The change from loud to soft is a good way to signal that it's time to settle.

What it helps with

Comprehension and discussion questions

Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.

  1. “What noises could the princess hear?”
  2. “Who was making all the noise?”
  3. “How do you think the princess felt?”
  4. “What helped her get to sleep?”
  5. “What noises can you hear at bedtime?”
  6. “What helps you feel sleepy?”

5-minute activities to try together

Loud to quiet

Make each noise from the book loudly, then again in a whisper. Finish with the quietest noise you can make.

Goodnight castle

Build a castle from blocks or cushions and put a teddy to bed inside it, saying goodnight to the noisy things outside.
