What age is it for? I'm Going to Make a Friend is best for ages 3–6. Good for: Moving somewhere new, and working out how to make a friend.

How to use it

Read it slowly and pause on each question. Ask your child what they think, and what they look for in a friend. It's lovely before starting somewhere new.

What it helps with

Comprehension and discussion questions

Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.

  1. “Why does the child need a new friend?”
  2. “What questions do they have?”
  3. “What do you look for in a friend?”
  4. “Should a friend hug you or give you space?”
  5. “How do you start making a friend?”
  6. “Who was the first friend you made?”

5-minute activities to try together

Friend wishes

Draw what your child hopes a new friend will be like, and one thing they could do together.

Hello practice

Practise saying hello and asking a question, like “What's your favourite game?”
