How to use it

Build up the dragon as big and scary, then enjoy the surprise. Afterwards, ask your child who the real hero was, and whether big things can be scared too.

What it helps with

Comprehension and discussion questions

Pick two or three, not all of them. “I don’t know” is a fine answer, and you can always come back to it another day.

  1. “What was the dragon like?”
  2. “What was the dragon’s secret?”
  3. “Who was the hero?”
  4. “Were you surprised? Why?”
  5. “Is it OK for big people to be scared sometimes?”
  6. “When have you been brave?”

5-minute activities to try together

Secret fears

Talk about something that grown-ups in the family are a bit scared of. It helps children know everyone has fears.

Tiny hero

Draw the smallest hero you can imagine and the big thing they're brave about.
